Solar Sailers are a technological concept that has always fascinated me. The idea is that you use a series of sails that capture particles from solar flares and thus are pushed along by them, the same way a wind sail propels a boat. They are usually the preserve of Sci Fi, but a few satellite concepts have emerged in the last few years. They typically have a teeeeeeny satellite attached to massive sails. To add to the impracticality these sails are notoriously fragile and make the satellite difficult to manoeuvre. Surface it to say that for us, the technology’s not quite there yet.
My concept ship is covered in small solar sails that can all fold up to protect themselves and the ship’s core. You can see the ship folded up below.
You can see the bridge no more habitable areas at the front, since that would be the area least exposed to solar radiation. I also wanted non-solar propulsion to be prominent since there would be times that you’d want to manoeuvre without the necessary solar winds. Hence, there’s a large engine at the back.
When in solar-propulsion, the three antenna move back towards the engine, allowing space for the sails to unfurl.
Once open, this ship’s translucent core is fully displayed, giving the ship an ultra-modern futuristic look.
